Texting while driving has become an increasingly dangerous habit among drivers. So dangerous that a person can be severely injured and even killed by someone that is involved in an accident where the driver was texting.

            Florida has not yet joined the 19 other states, District of Columbia, and Guam in a ban of text messaging for all drivers¹. However, proposed legislation is in the works for the 2010 legislative session. Governor Charlie Crist has recently endorsed a ban on texting while driving which may add momentum to the bills filed for 2010².

            It’s true that text messaging appears to involve younger drivers and studies have suggested that texting while driving can be more dangerous that driving drunk³. That is why we encourage parents to speak with their children about the dangers of text messaging while driving.

            Specifically, a Virginia Tech study showed that a driver reading or sending a text message would be looking away from traffic for approximately 5 seconds. During that time, if that vehicle is traveling at 60mph, it can travel over 100 yards (length of a football field)⁴.
